June 30

Workshop Day 11

Regular routine of great meals, work shifts, exercise, and personal practice time.

Today the Flute Workshop class went on a hike to Steven's Glen led by Linda Toote! In the evening the Percussion Workshop and  the String Quartet Workshop performed recitals. There were also a few bear sightings but fortunately with no trouble.

July 1

Workshop Day 12

Regular routine of great meals, work shifts, exercise, and personal practice time.

The following workshops had recitals today: horn, double bass, clarinet, bassoon, oboe, tuba/euphonium, and trombone. The rest of the workshops were hard at work preparing for their recitals tomorrow. Like many students I took a private lesson from a faculty member (Ona Jonaityte: Flute) and enjoyed it immensely! Tonight a few of us went to go see James Taylor & the Boston Pops performed at the Tanglewood Shed! When we returned there was a Black-light Dance Party in the cafeteria! It was a good night.

July 2

Workshop Day 13 - Last Day - Move-Out Day!

Today the last workshops performed recitals throughout the day: trumpet, saxophone, flute, and string quartets. Students who were not staying for the BUTI Large Programs said their fond farewells and hated to leave. None left untouched by the BUTI experience!

Tonight a few of us went to the movies to watched "Bad Teacher" in Pittsfield, MA.



July 3

Large Programs - Move-In Day!

They're here...

Today all of the staff members were hard at work helping the new students register and move-in. Some of our duties dealt with:
Greeting, desk duty, traffic duty, transportation duty, merchandise, IDs, etc

It was great to welcome these new, enthusiasts artists and begin an awesome summer of music and growth!

July 4

Large Programs Day 1

All of the students began their various routines of theory, diction, dictation, composition, private lessons, chamber ensemble rehearsals, large ensemble (wind ensemble & orchestra) rehearsals, lectures, recitals, guest masterclasses, recordings, and of course, personal practice time.

Today was ensemble seating auditions for the ensembles and a sense of focus and urgency was in the air.

After a busy first day, many of the students went on a Walmart Trip tonight to get supplies. A few of us also went to go see the James Taylor Band Concert in the Tanglewood Shed.
Tanglewood Fireworks followed immediately after the concert; they were awesome!!!

July 5

Large Programs Day 2

Regular routine of great meals, work shifts, exercise, and personal practice time.

Today was a busy day of shuttling students to and from rehearsal. For both returning staff and students, there were new rehearsal facilities for the musicians. This evening, Dr. Jennifer Bill performed a saxophone recital at Trinity Church in Lenox, MA.
Tonight there was also TMC Concert at the Tanglewood Grounds.The program: Barber Second Essay for Orchestra, Copland Billy the Kid Suite, and Bernstein Symphony No. 2 The Age of Anxiety.

July 6

Large Programs Day 3

Regular routine of great meals, work shifts, exercise, and personal practice time.


Today I went to explore the Aaron Copland Library at Tanglewood! This evening there was a Young Artists Piano Program guest artist recital at the west street theatre. Benjamin Warsaw (pianist and composer) performed his 24 piano preludes. Later a few of us went to spinning class again at the Lenox Fitness Center. Tonight a group of us went to go see Transformers 3! There was yoga from 7-8pm in the Lively Stones building. Also, tonight there was a TMC Vocal and Chamber Concert.

July 7

Large Programs Day 4

Regular routine of great meals, work shifts, exercise, and personal practice time.

This evening Harvey Sachs gave a guest lecture at Trinity Church entitled:
Some great conductors of the past: Why were they great?

Also, this evening Eve Wolf gave a guest lecture at the West Street Theater entitled:
Confronting memory: An introduction to memory techniques for musicians

Tonight the Mark O'Connor String Quartet performed a concert at Tanglewood in Ozawa Hall.

July 8

Large Programs Day 5

Regular routine of great meals, work shifts, exercise, and personal practice time.

Today there was an Opening Voice Student recital at West Street Theater in the afternoon and an Opening Voice Student recital at West Street Theater in the evening. A few of us went to the Lenox Farmers Market during the day to sample the local foods and delicacies.
Tonight was the Boston Symphony Orchestra Opening Night Gala at the Tanglewood Shed! Practically everyone from BUTI attended. The program: Bellini - Excerpts from Act 1 of Norma, Verdi - Trio from Act 3 of I Lombardi, Rossini - Overture to William Tell, Respighi - Pines of Rome!

July 9

Large Programs Day 6

Regular routine of great meals, work shifts, exercise, and personal practice time.


This morning there was another Opening Voice Student recital at the West Street Theater. This afternoon there was a Young Artists Piano Program recital at the West Street Theater. A group of students went on a Lake Trip to the BSO Beach in the afternoon as well and had a great deal of fun!

Following an amazing opening night concert, the Boston Symphony Orchestra performed the Berlioz Requiem tonight at the Tanglewood Shed!

July 10

Large Programs Day 7

Regular routine of great meals, work shifts, church, exercise, and personal practice time.


Sunday was a full day of music and excitement.

In the morning, a group of students went on a BUTI Hike to Monument Mountain. Also, there was a TMC Chamber Concert. From 12-1pm there was yoga class from at the West Street Theater.
In the afternoon the Boston Symphony Orchestra performed another a third consecutive concert at the Tanglewood Shed with Joshua Bell as soloist. The program: Jennifer Higdon - Loco, Max BruchPathetique).

This evening there was a Vocal Faculty recital at the West Street Theater.

RECAP OVER - PHEW! Tomorrow starts another exciting week at BUTI!
