TMC Concert Review 7/5/11

The following concert review is from Evan Kahn (YAO Cello, Lenox 1) regarding the recent July 5th TMC Concert.

Program: Barber - Second Essay for Orchestra, Copland - Billy the Kid Suite, and Bernstein - Symphony No. 2 (The Age of Anxiety).

Not two seconds after maestro Ken-David Masur’s cutoff, a BUTI piano student (whose name will not be mentioned, for the sake of his noble integrity) made a cry that resounded through Ozawa Hall. I don’t think that level of exhilaration was completely merited, but the Tanglewood Music Center (TMC) Orchestra put on a formidable performance.
Masur was masterful, and although I don’t know much about conducting technique, his sweeping figure built an impressive, cohesive orchestra out of people who had not known each other a few weeks previous. He must have put the group through intensive rehearsal to shape the single musical entity that I saw onstage.
Seriously, the TMC ensemble was amazing — on par with many a professional orchestra that I’ve seen. Intonation was practically impeccable, and the orchestra moved together like it had been formed years instead of weeks ago.
I’ve never met a Samuel Barber piece I didn’t like, and the first piece the orchestra played — his Second Essay for Orchestra — is one of my favorites. I felt they did it great justice, and many BUTI students said it was their favorite piece on the program. One percussionist in the Young Artists Orchestra did have a few criticisms, all of which I had missed. “The timpanist was horrible,” he said. “It was very ticky, and he had poor mallet choices. The brass’s dynamic contrasts could’ve been more drastic, too.” The cello section, and all the strings and woodwinds for that matter, were spot on.
My composition student friend and I both agreed — and I don’t know how it’s possible to explain why we felt this way — that the bass drum player during Aaron Copland’s Suite from the ballet “Billy the Kid” was the best we’d ever heard. I mean, how do you determine one good bass drum player from another? For some reason, we just knew. I’d never heard the piece, but I was absolutely blown away; I liked the piece better than any other Copland I’d heard. If you haven’t heard the piece, I’d go seek it out now, while you’re still reading this, so it’s fresh in your mind. There was not one negative comment about the Copland — to my ears it was impeccable.
Bernstein’s Symphony No. 2, “The Age of Anxiety,” was not at all what I’d expected. I’d never heard the piece in its entirety, so I was surprised when I saw in the program that the piece was written for piano and orchestra, and is divided into two three-section parts as opposed to the traditional symphonic form. Part I begins with a Prologue and flows cleanly into 14 variations on the Prologue’s theme, “The Seven Ages” and “The Seven Stages” respectively. There is a break before Part II, which starts off with a “Dirge” begun as a solo piano tune. This fragile being bursts apart in “The Masque,” during which a bassist goes up to join the pianist in a rollicking and rather unsettling swing feel. The piece ends accordingly, with an insurmountable “Epilogue.”
The pianist was using music, although since it was a long piece (and since the remarkable pianist was a biochemistry major) it was understandable. I’m not the biggest Bernstein fan, but “The Age of Anxiety” made me respect him much more as a composer. The orchestra pulled the piece off, but it was probably the weakest of the three — although one must keep in mind that it was still a fantastic performance, the Bernstein wasn’t without noticeable mistakes.
It’s unbelievable, really, that we all get to see concerts like these — every day, if we want — for free. This concert proved that the center of America’s world of classical music during the summer is right here, in Tanglewood!

Thank you for the contribution Evan!

June 21 - June 29

It's been a busy couple of days at BUTI!
Time to recap!

June 21

Workshops Day 2

In addition to the regular routine of great meals, work shifts, exercise, and personal practice time, I sat in and occasionally helped out with the flute workshop. As a BUTI Workshop Alumni from just last year, observing Linda Toote challenge and encourage a fresh batch of flute students brought back very vivid memories. Many of the other RAs who are BUTI alumni are also experiencing these same walks down memory lane. This evening, Linda Toote and her assistant, Ona Jonaityte, performed a great recital of flute duets. It is always exciting to hear my instructor perform and here the raving reviews for other attendees. Tonight, Jon and I hosted "Lifebook Charades" with our floor for congregating hour. Groups of students acted out specific rules and regulations from the BUTI Lifebook without words, only gestures and movements. After the fun, it was time for bed.

June 22

Workshops Day 3

Regular routine of great meals, work shifts, exercise, and personal practice time.
This morning I helped out again with the flute workshop. Tonight, the Klaritas Trio performed a recital at Trinity Church in Lenox, MA.

June 23

Workshops Day 4

Regular routine of great meals, work shifts, exercise, and personal practice time.
Today I bought tickets for the Earth, Wind & Fire concert this Saturday! Tonight the amazing Muir String Quartet, Boston University's String Quartet In-Residence, performed a recital at Trinity Church in Lenox, MA.

June 24

Workshops Day 5

Regular routine of great meals, work shifts, exercise, and personal practice time.
Tonight, Ken Radnofsky performed a saxophone recital at Trinity Church in Lenox, MA. Later some of the BUTI staff and I explored the nightlife in Lenox and Lee, MA.

June 25

Workshops Day 6

Regular routine of great meals, work shifts, exercise, and personal practice time.
This morning, some of the staff and I went to "boot camp" class at the fitness center. It was exhausting as always. During the evening, Mike Roylance performed a tuba recital at Trinity Church in Lenox, MA. That night some of us went to the Earth, Wind, and Fire concert! It was amazing to witness such legends of music in action. After the concert, we returned to campus for the Tangle Mixer! Students socialized in the cafeteria with free snacks, games, and music.

June 26

Workshops Day 7

Regular routine of great meals, work shifts, exercise, church, and personal practice time.
This evening, Linda Toote (flute), Michelle Lacourse (viola), and Martin Amlin (piano) performed a recital at Trinity Church in Lenox, MA. Tonight, Jon and I hosted a pizza and soda night for our floor.

June 27

Workshops Day 8

Regular routine of great meals, work shifts, exercise, and personal practice time.
This morning, I helped out again with the flute workshop. This evening, Don Lucas performed an exciting trombone recital at Trinity Church in Lenox, MA. After dinner, one of the students on my floor had an allergic reaction to a bee sting and had to be taken to the hospital. Keeping with BUTI procedure, I followed behind the ambulance to wait with him in the emergency room. Fortunately, he was just fine and we ended up chatting for a few hours before a doctor finally attended to him. We returned to campus just in time for the test fire drill. The entire simulation ran smoothly.

June 28

Workshops Day 9

Regular routine of great meals, work shifts, exercise, and personal practice time.
A couple of us went to yoga class at the fitness center this morning. Sadly, there was no faculty recital tonight. However, Jon and I hosted an ice cream social for our floor tonight and they really enjoyed it. While they ate, we played "two truths and a lie" so they could continue to get to know each other. For anyone unfamiliar with this game, we went around in a circle and each person said "two truths and a lie," challenging everyone else to guess which of the three statements was false.

June 29

Workshops Day 10

Regular routine of great meals, work shifts, exercise, and personal practice time.

A group of us went to a very hard spinning class again at the fitness center. This evening, Eric Ruske performed an amazing french horn recital at Trinity Church in Lenox, MA. After dinner, a large group of us went out in Lee and Lenox, MA to celebrate the 21st birthday of another RA staff member. Everyone had a great time!

Phew! Long recap...stay tuned for more BUTI news, events, and daily life!

Until then, good night & good music!

Workshops Day 1

I made it to the office at 7am this morning for my Rooster shift. I found out there had been a black bear sighting earlier around 6am. He must have wanted the left-overs in the trash from the BBQ! After I got off, I ate breakfast and helped some students around campus. Many of them are still learning about the campus layout and schedule. Next I walked to the coffee shop and enjoyed the internet for awhile. After lunch, a group of us went to the fitness center for a "spinning" class. It was tough but also a lot of fun. Unfortunately, we missed Terry Everson's trumpet recital, but fortunately I have heard his amazing playing before on many occasions. After dinner, we changed into nice clothes for the faculty & staff reception that took place on campus after the recital. That night, Jon and I made sure the students were in their rooms for curfew. When we realized most of our floor students were tired from the first day of music activities, we decided to hold off on charades and games until tomorrow night.

Tomorrow evening is Linda's Toote's flute recital (my instructor!)

Until then, good night & good music!

It's Move-in Day!

Today all of the staff assembled at 8am after breakfast to organize the campus. The new students began arriving around 10am and by the afternoon campus was in full swing. Staff were placed throughout campus to help with registration, driving directions, parking, ID pictures, greeting, moving in, and any confusion. Once most of our students were getting settled, Jon and I practiced music for a little while. In the evening, there was an all-campus Welcome BBQ were new students, staff, and faculty had a chance to meet one another. That night we had a meeting in the West Street Theater so that the students could meet and learn about the staff and the RAs. Later after that, all of the RAs had floor meetings with the students of their respective dorms. It was great to get to know the new students and answer their questions. Even though some of them are a little nervous to be at camp and away from home for the first time, all of them seem very excited for the musical, social, and personal adventures that await them! After the meeting, it was bedtime.

Tomorrow is Day 1 for the BUTI Workshops!

Until then, good night & good music!

Day-Off!

A group of us went to the Fitness Center at 10:30am for a "Bootcamp" class. There were about eight exercise stations placed around the room. Each station worked a different muscle group, from the shoulders to the calves and everything else in between. Needless to say, we were all very tired by the end of the class. Afterwards, we made it back in time to catch brunch. Next, Jon Anderson (my co-RA) and I worked some more on floor decorations. The theme is STAR WARS! Other floors also have cool themes like Disney world, Jungle Safari, and BUTI-book (i.e. Facebook). In the afternoon a group of us went to the Tanglewood/BSO Beach to hang out. It was definitely a beautiful, sunny day. Jon and I remembered we still had some last minute supplies to buy so we went to the Price Shopper store next. On our way back to campus we also stopped by the Arcadia sports shop to browse merchandise and seek advice regarding hiking/kayaking activities for our floor. When we finally returned to campus, we finished floor decorations and ate dinner. After that we practiced our instruments for awhile. At 8:30pm we had an All Staff Meeting to prepare for the move-in day and the beginning of the BUTI season! Since the meeting was quite long, we finished any last minute affairs we had to take care of and went straight to bed...well at least I did.

It's an exciting day tomorrow!

Until then, good night & good music!
